Developing a sense of belonging

St George's is a caring school that provides a safe, supportive environment where the students are encouraged to grow and challenge themselves and they belong to a base class, a team, a house and a school family. As a school we encourage and foster compassionate relationships within our school whanau.

The Base Class teacher

Base teachers and base classrooms are where the day starts and ends for your child. Base teachers form a relationship of trust with each student in their classroom. Base classes enable a sense of belonging for every student.

Our 4 Houses

Developing House Spirit and a sense of belonging is an integral part of our House system.

Bledisloe, Fergusson, Jellicoe and Norrie Houses are steeped in tradition, healthy rivalry and camaraderie.

The Diverse Learning team

A special part of the learning support structure at St George's is our Diverse Learning Team. St George's has specialised teachers and learning assistants who specialise in supporting students with diverse learning needs. The Diverse Learning team provides additional support to students in building their personalised learning strategies.

Check ins

Every fortnight the students complete a quick 'check-in' survey relating to how they feel about school, their peer and teacher relationships and how they are getting on in general. These surveys help us to ensure that students are supported appropriately.

Celebrations, Badges and Colours

A teams or school assembly is held on Friday afternoon. Whole School assembly is each fortnight. The following awards, if achieved, are given out at each assembly:

  • Star of the Week Certificate
  • Reader of the Week Certificate
  • Author of the Week Certificate
  • Mathematician of the Week Certificate
  • Specialist subject area Certificate
  • Growth Mindset Certificate
  • Headmaster’s Award
  • First Honours
  • Second Honours
  • Millennium Certificate and Badge

Badges

Merit points are earned by individual students for class work, help around the school, conduct and behaviour.  Merits are earned!

  • First Honours Certificate is presented on earning 300 merits.
  • Second Honours Certificate is presented on completion of 600 merits.
  • Millennium Award is presented on earning 1000 merits.

All merit points are carried forward to the student’s House.  These points build toward each term’s totals for the House Shield competition.  This is announced and awarded at our end of year prizegiving.

A School Cultural Assembly is held the second to last Friday of each term.  The following awards, in addition to the standard weekly Assembly awards, if achieved, are given out at Cultural Assembly:

Colours - Academic, Sporting, Cultural and Service

Sports Trophies / Certificates

The end of year prizegiving is an occasion where the School celebrates the year that has been and is an opportunity to acknowledge our Year 8 Leavers, and students who have exemplified excellence in academic, sporting, or cultural areas.

Badges and Colours

Badges can be earned following specific criteria set out in a range of disciplines from the NZ Science and Mathematics badges to Art and Chess badges. The colours is one of the highest awards a student can strive for overtime. Colours represents proven excellence discipline within an academic, sporting, service or cultural discipline. Once awarded the black bar colour is sewn onto the student's blazer.

Oversight and Wellbeing

A child’s confidence, self-belief and happiness are paramount. These attributes are essential for a student to have fun in learning, to discover their passions and try new things. It is important us that we work in partnership with our parents to ensure our arms wide round approach for each student.

Oversight a student's needs, achievements and wellbeing enables us to fully support our students. Our teachers, the diverse learning team, the Headmaster and the Chaplain are here to support our students.

Pastoral Care within the whole community

At St George's our Anglican faith underpins our moral and spiritual growth in our community. With kind hearts, kind thoughts, kind words and kind actions, our students are making a positive difference to both our school and the wider community. Within our school we foster respectful, compassionate relationships within our school whanau. The culture within St George's encourages and expects the older students to role model and show care for the younger school students.
