St George's Preparatory School

St George's is an Anglican, independent, co-educational, day school for Years 1-8, founded on Christian values.  St George’s opened in 1927.  The St George’s Committee oversees the operation of the school.  It is a standing committee of the Whanganui College Board of Trustees, the governors.

The original school site was on Grey Street. In 2017 the St George's new school site was officially opened as part of the shared campus with the state integrated, Whanganui Collegiate School .

St George's is a preparatory school to Whanganui Collegiate School. The majority of our Year 8 students take up the opportunity to enrol at Collegiate from Year 9. The students know the campus and its facilities very well. It is wonderful to continue to connect with our alumni on our shared campus as they progress through secondary school and beyond.

One shared campus:

Welcome to St George's
'The Drive' connects our two schools on our shared campus. It is a time to acknowledge each other, be organised getting to different shared facilities and of course have lunch together in the Dining Hall.

The Chapel
Our Chapel Choir practices are held in the Chapel. The Bradley window, overlooks the Chapel, this stained glass window is from the original St George's school campus chapel on Grey Street.  Our Choir sings at our family Chapel Services and other community events. The Choir is directed by our Chaplain, Dr. Rev'd Sarah Harris.

The H.G. Carver Library
The students spend enjoyable time during class and break times engaged in reading and exploring new books with our shared campus librarians in the spacious H.G. Carver Library. The library caters for Year 1-13 students.

The Prince Edward Auditorium
The Prince Edward Auditorium is used by our students for weekly Assemblies, House Music, the school production and other performances and visiting performance groups.

The Foundation Music Suite
Our students have weekly Music lessons here. Many students opt into itinerant musical instrument and/or voice lessons with our itinerant music teachers.

The Sir Harold Gillies Science Centre
Our students enjoy learning Science in state of the art Science labs. This enables discovery through learning, with hands on experiments and learning science safety. Awe and wonder in learning is empowered here in this amazing facility with our specialist Science teachers.

The Dining Hall
Our entire school has lunch in the dining hall each day. Students either have a packed lunch or opt into meals provided by Ovation Catering. It is wonderful to have lunch together as a whole school. This social gathering time is important for our students and staff. This also provides valuable time together learning how to have dinner table conversations, ensure table manners and of course celebrate student birthdays by singing, 'Happy Birthday".

The Swimming Pool
During the Summer terms we enjoy swimming and aquatics in our PE programmes. The campus pool provides a wonderful space for this skills development and also an opportunity to cool off during a hot day. We also offer Life Saving training and the students from Y5-8 can opt into these lessons.

The Foundation Hockey Turf
We utilise the hockey turf for Winter Sports hockey practices and games for St George's Students. We host quadrangular inter-school competitions here also.

The Cricket Academy
We utilise the outer field nets Cricket practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays. When wet our 1st XI teams can access the indoor Cricket Academy, another great shared campus facility.
