The ‘Discovery through Learning’ curriculum at St George’s is the term that defines what we do and happroachng.
We want our students to dream big, be daring and have the confidence to try new things and learn from their mistakes.
English and Mathematics are the foundation of our ‘Discovery through Learning’ curriculum. We have specialist teachers who work throughout the school with our students in these foundation subjects.
The Literacy and Mathematics progressions for each student are regularly monitored and reported on, to our parents. A student’s progress is developmental. As part of our personalised learning approach we assess students as and when required. We use this approach to support student wellbeing and also recognise your child’s readiness in teaching and learning rather than having big assessment weeks which can cause unnecessary concern for students.
Layered on top of these core subjects is the Discovery Curriculum which creates synergy between the Arts and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects, as well as helping develop social and business enterprise. It provides opportunities for creativity, innovation, risk taking and entrepreneurial endeavours. Our students become more caring, critical and creative thinkers because of this skilful thread to help students make better sense of the world around them.
To achieve the Discovery aspirations of the school St Georges, we have specialist teachers in the Arts including, visual arts, music and performance, Science and Technology, Global Citizenship, Te Reo Māori, Heath and Physical Education, and Philosophy and Religious education and ‘Discovery through Learning’.
Each Wednesday includes 2 hours of Discovery as a specialised subject area. During this time students are involved in a a wide range of specialist teaching and learning areas. Y1-5 students have a term-by-term rotation, and Y6-8 students select their preferred options for each semester (two terms). Some examples of Discovery classes on offer are:
Teachers choose their options and so these may change from time to time.
Another important aspect of school life at St George’s is our ‘Discovery through Learning’ Music lessons in the Music Suite. Also, students may opt into itinerant musical instrument and/or singing lessons. These are held during class hours. Speech and Drama lessons are also optional in Semester Two (Terms 3 & 4).
House Music is an annual event held at the Prince Edward Auditorium . This is a performance extravaganza and a memorable, fun evening of dance and song, filled with house spirit. This is always a sell-out evening with parents and other family members in the 500 seat Prince Edward Auditorium.
Our all comers Choir is filled with students from Y2-8. Our Chaplain Dr. Rev'd Sarah Harris is our Choir Director. Sarah is also developing an auditioned senior choir. The Choir delivers many performances in the weekly Chapel services, our family Sunday Chapel services and in the community.
At our school, Kapahaka is a cherished tradition that embodies our commitment to understanding and role modelling tikanga. Students dedicate personal time to practice for special school events, ensuring they lead waiata or haka with precise pronunciation and a deep knowledge of the words. They learn and perform actions with enthusiasm, often assisting in coaching their peers. Our Kapahaka members attend all practices and school events, including whakanui (celebrations and commemorations), poroaki (farewells), and whakatau (welcome ceremonies), where they often take on speaking roles in te reo Māori, enriching the cultural fabric of our community.
As part of St George’s commitment to encouraging physical skills, activity, movement, fair play and team work St George’s offers optional sport for Year 3 students and compulsory sport for Years 4-8.
These students participate in their Summer or Winter sport on a Tuesday from 3.30 - 4.45pm and Wednesday from 2.30 - 3.30pm. This regular sports offering throughout each week also enables pathways for students to excel in their chosen sport.
We have staff and outside providers who are experienced coaches in the Summer and Winter sports codes on offer. Our state-of-the-art facilities on our shared campus with Whanganui Collegiate School combined with the expertise of our coaches supports our commitment to Sports for our students.
St George’s has a commitment to water competence for all our students. We believe that it is a vital life skill that all students should have.
All year groups from Year 1 have compulsory swimming. For the younger year groups aquatics learning basics are taught at the at the Splash Centre learning pool, this is during the two winter terms and for the older year groups this is at the shared campus school pool.
Our Y5-8 students can take up learning to lifesave and some students compete in the interschools lifesaving competition.
Interhouse competitions are held for cross- country, athletics, art, house music and Mathex and Chess events. Our senior students lead the house and for younger students these competitions provide opportunities to build relationships with other year groups from within their house. These are a great opportunity to show teamwork and build camaraderie.
There are an array of Sports, Cultural and Academic Interschool Whanganui sports competitions. We also provide sports exchanges like the biannual South Island Sports Winter Tour and the summer and winter quadrangular sports tournaments. These are a highlight for our students and often are the culmination of many years of competition.
Inclusive of our ‘Discovery through Learning’ curriculum is the Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) experiences. These field trips and overnight camps connect to the learning concepts within a range of subject areas. We have field trips to local and regional events and areas, overnight camps, and Marae stays. This supports our Community pillar with our students connecting and contributing positively with our wider community.
